Open Position at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill an associate research physicist position at Laboratory Astrophysics Division in Plasma Science & Technology Department. Under supervisions by senior personnel, the researcher will perform campaigns in liquid metal Magnetorotational Instability experiment to investigate mechanisms for fast angular momentum transport, and also the nonlinear physics of Rossby waves and zonal flow system. Candidates must have an extensive background in experimental physics, preferably fluid dynamics, liquid metal MHD and plasma physics. The major responsibilities include handling liquid gallium in laboratory, designing and implementing diagnostics, performing experiments, analyzing data, interpreting, presenting and publishing results jointly with other researchers. Coordinating activity with other technical, engineering and administrative personnel is also essential. Development of new ideas should help grow the area of laboratory plasma astrophysics at PPPL in the long term. Applicant should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics or related physics, with preference given to applicants with experience in fluid dynamics, liquid metal MHD and its diagnostics, data acquisition, data processing, and applications to astrophysics and geophysics.

You can use my contact info below.

Thanks,

Second announcement: 9th International pamir conference on fundamental and applied MHD – Riga, Latvia, June 16-20, 2014

Second announcement
9th International pamir conference on fundamental and applied MHD – Riga, Latvia, June 16-20, 2014

Dear colleagues,
The new pamir conference will be organized in Latvia in June 2014. You will find all information about this event on the web site “http://pamir.sal.lv/2014/“.

This conference will be supported by the European commission in the frame of a program devoted to the production of electricity in space. For this reason two new topics will be included in addition with MHD, liquid metal technology and ferro fluids :

– thermoacoustic system
– space : stress on technologies

A summer school, supported by the European commission, will be proposed in these two topics during the conference.

Calendar of events

  • Deadline for abstracts : December 20, 2013
  • Notification to authors : February 28, 2014
  • Deadline for full paper : April 30, 2014
  • Registration prior : May 16, 2014

Best regards,
pamir secretary

Workshop “Tangled Magnetic Fields in Astro- and Plasma Physics”

The above meeting will be held in autumn in the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) in Scotland as a satellite workshop of a six-month program on

TOPOLOGICAL DYNAMICS IN THE PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

16 July – 21 December 2012

Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge, UK

WWW.NEWTON.AC.UK/PROGRAMMES/TOD

The Workshop in Edinburgh will focus on the research exploiting topological and geometrical concepts in the study of morphology and evolution of magnetic fields in astrophysics and plasma physics. The topics will include:

  • Dynamo action associated with chiral turbulence, in planetary and solar contexts;
  • Eruption of solar/stellar fields through chromospheres and coronae;
  • Braiding of the coronal field due to footpoint motion;
  • Spontaneous field discontinuities (current sheets) and coronal heating;
  • Magneto-rotational instability (MRI) in accretion discs, and associated transport of angular momentum;
  • Magnetostatic equilibria in toroidal fusion plasmas; their stability and containment characteristics.

For more information, including the list of invited lectures, please visit www.icms.org.uk

If you would like to participate and be considered for a contributed talk or poster, please complete the  on-line application form.  The  deadline for applications is

31 August 2012

We encourage early applications. Registration may have to be closed before the deadline as the number of Participants is limited by the size of the lecture hall.

PhD studentship in Applied Mathematics (Fluid Dynamics) at Coventry University (UK)

(from Sergei Molokov, Coventry)

Coventry University invites applications for a 3.5-year PhD Industrial CASE studentship in Applied Mathematics (Fluid Dynamics). The studentship is co-funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (http://www.ccfe.ac.uk/). The work, to be performed in collaboration with Culham and with Ilmenau University of Technology (Germany, http://www.tu-ilmenau.de/tfd/ ), involves Direct Numerical Simulation of turbulent flow in rectangular ducts in the presence of a strong magnetic field with reference to liquid metal blankets for fusion reactors.

Candidates must be EU nationals holding a BSc degree in Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline (or those who will have obtained the degree by September 2012). Exceptional overseas students are also encouraged to apply.

The maintenance grant is £13,260 p.a. tax free. The starting date must be not later than the end of September, 2012.

For an informal discussion please contact Prof Sergei Molokov at s.molokov(at)coventry.ac.uk
(http://nestor2.coventry.ac.uk/research/appmath/staff/molokov.php).

Please submit an application form, a detailed CV, two references (one of which must be academic) and a covering letter to research-apps.pg(at)coventry.ac.uk.

The deadline for applications is 13th April, 2012. However, the position will remain open
until the suitable candidate is found.

European MHD Days 2012

Dear all,

Most of us attend their national MHD meetings once per year to exchange ideas with their national colleagues.
In order to promote the collaboration within Europe we propose to join the UK, French and German MHD meetings 2012
and invite people from other countries to contribute as well.

The European MHD Days 2012 will be held in Nice on October 1-4. Please mark these dates in your calendar.
We are currently working on a website for further information and will inform you once its ready.

All the best
